| Description de l’avers | The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield divided into three sections: the upper portion bearing a golden key between two rocky promontories and a rising sun, the lower-left quartering displaying alternating blue and white diagonal stripes representing the original Cuban departments, and the lower-right section featuring a royal palm tree. The shield is surmounted by a Phrygian cap atop a fasces, symbolising liberty and strength, and is flanked by laurel and oak branches tied at the base. Two five-pointed stars appear at left and right within the beaded border. Cuba issued a long run of commemorative peso pieces through the 1980s and into the 1990s targeting the collector and tourist hard-currency market rather than domestic circulation — the domestic peso and the convertible peso operated as parallel systems, and most Cubans never handled these coins at all. This Columbus piece appeared as the quincentennial of the 1492 voyage approached, part of a broader wave of Latin American commemorative programs timed to 1992.
Spain and much of Latin America treated the quincentennial as a celebration; Cuba's framing was characteristically different, emphasizing colonization and its consequences.
