Cuba issued a long-running series of large copper collector pieces through the 1990s and 2000s, largely targeting the foreign hard-currency market rather than domestic circulation. The Guevara peso fits squarely in that commercial program — produced for export sale, not the Cuban peso economy that ordinary Cubans actually used.
Guevara was killed in Bolivia in October 1967, on the direct orders of the Bolivian government with CIA involvement confirmed by declassified documents released in the 1990s.
