This issue belongs to a series of Cuban commemoratives produced through the state-run ETECSA and Casa de la Moneda in the mid-1990s, a period when the Cuban government was generating hard currency through collector coin programs following the economic collapse triggered by Soviet withdrawal. The 1997 date lands precisely on the thirtieth anniversary of Guevara's death in Bolivia — October 9, 1967 — and the timing was deliberate, coinciding with a wave of official commemorations that also saw his remains repatriated from Bolivia to Santa Clara that same year.
