Cuba's early 1990s prehistoric fauna series arrived at a specific moment of economic desperation — the collapse of Soviet subsidies had triggered the "Special Period in Time of Peace," and the Cuban mint pivoted aggressively toward foreign-currency collector issues to generate hard currency the domestic economy could not. This coin never circulated in Cuba in any meaningful sense.
The Chalicotherium, an odd-toed ungulate that went extinct roughly 3.5 million years ago, had no particular connection to Cuban paleontology — its fossils are associated primarily with Africa and Eurasia.
