The Banco Central de la República Dominicana was established in 1947, replacing the currency board arrangement that had tied Dominican monetary policy to U.S. dollar reserves since the American occupation era. This one-peso silver issue belongs to a series that maintained the coin's traditional .900 fineness and 26.7g specification — dimensions inherited directly from the peso fuerte standard codified decades earlier, mirroring the old Maria Teresa thaler weight conventions adopted across Latin American silver coinage.
By 1972, rising silver prices were already making such pieces economically impractical to circulate, and the denomination would soon migrate to base metal.
