Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield divided into three sections: the upper portion shows a golden key between two headlands and the open sea, symbolizing Cuba's strategic position; the left section bears a blue-and-white striped field with a royal palm; and the right section displays a mountain landscape. The shield is surmounted by a Phrygian cap on a pike with a star, and flanked by sprigs of oak on the left and laurel on the right, bound at the base. The legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper periphery in bold Latin characters, while the denomination 1 PESO is inscribed along the lower rim.
