Cuba's 1977 silver pattern series honored figures of the Ten Years' War, and this peso bearing the name of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes — the sugar plantation owner who freed his slaves and launched the rebellion at La Demajagua in October 1868 — was never approved for circulation. Pattern strikes of this period were produced by the Banco Nacional primarily for presentation sets and numismatic export, a hard-currency strategy the Castro government pursued aggressively through the late 1970s. KM#PN11 status confirms this piece did not advance beyond the trial stage.
