Reverse description A facing bust portrait of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the Cuban independence hero, is rendered in high relief at the center of the field, depicting him with shoulder-length hair, a prominent moustache, and a bow tie. The dates 1868 and 1977 flank the portrait at mid-field, commemorating the anniversary of the Grito de Yara. The legend CARLOS MANUEL DE CESPEDES arcs along the upper periphery, and GRITO DE YARA is inscribed along the lower periphery, with five-pointed stars serving as decorative separators, all in raised Latin lettering.

Additional information

Cuba's 1977 silver pattern series honored figures of the Ten Years' War, and this peso bearing the name of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes — the sugar plantation owner who freed his slaves and launched the rebellion at La Demajagua in October 1868 — was never approved for circulation. Pattern strikes of this period were produced by the Banco Nacional primarily for presentation sets and numismatic export, a hard-currency strategy the Castro government pursued aggressively through the late 1970s. KM#PN11 status confirms this piece did not advance beyond the trial stage.
