The Banco Provincial de Córdoba was one of several Argentine provincial banks authorized to issue currency under the 1854 banking legislation, operating largely independent of Buenos Aires at a time when provincial monetary autonomy was fiercely defended. By 1873, the bank was managing a note circulation that far exceeded its specie reserves — a chronic condition across the Argentine interior that would eventually contribute to the banking crises of the late 1870s and 1880s.
PS#729 is a scarce reference. Provincial Córdoba notes from this period suffered heavy attrition through redemption drives and the eventual nationalization of currency functions under the Banco Nacional in 1873–1876.
