Banco Paraná was one of several provincial Argentine banks chartered in the 1860s under a decentralized banking framework that allowed individual provinces to issue their own currency — a situation that produced dozens of competing note series before the Banco Nacional eventually moved to consolidate control in the 1870s. The Entre Ríos province, where Paraná is located, was never a major commercial center, and the bank's circulation was geographically limited from the start.

The "Boliviano" denomination is the tell: this unit was used in Argentina during a transitional period before the peso fuerte and later the peso moneda nacional standardized the accounting system. Notes denominated in Bolivianos were being phased out by the early 1870s, making the 1868 issue date close to the practical end of this denomination's useful life.
