Aanvullende informatie

O'Higgins died in 1842 having never returned to Chile after his forced abdication and exile to Peru in 1823. His rehabilitation as national hero was a long and politically convenient process — Pinochet's regime, which came to power in the 1973 coup, leaned heavily on foundational patriot imagery to legitimize military rule. The timing of this issue, two years after the coup, is not coincidental.

Chile shifted from aluminum bronze to copper-nickel for this denomination during the mid-1970s as part of broader monetary reforms following the escudo's collapse and the introduction of the new peso in 1975.
