Banco del Norte was one of several private Colombian banks chartered under the 1880 banking law, which allowed state and regional banks to issue their own circulating notes — a deliberately decentralized monetary arrangement that lasted until the Banco de la República absorbed the function in the 1920s. The bank operated in the Norte de Santander region, and notes printed locally by Litografía D. Paredes represent an unusually early example of Colombian banknote production done entirely within the country rather than contracted to foreign security printers.
Surviving examples are rare. The regional banks of this period issued in small volumes, circulated hard, and were rarely preserved.
