The Banco de Nicaragua was a private commercial institution operating under concession from the Nicaraguan government during the brief liberal reform period that followed the 1893 revolution — though this series predates that upheaval, placing it squarely in the more conservative Sacasa administration years. Waterlow & Sons handled a significant portion of Latin American private bank printing at this time, and the Banco de Nicaragua account was one of several Central American contracts they held concurrently.
The bank lost its concession following Zelaya's 1893 takeover, which cut the series short and left a portion of the print run unredeemed.
