Obverse description Central device depicts the Mexican republican eagle displayed, perched upon a cactus rising from a rocky outcrop, grasping a serpent in its beak — the traditional arms of the Mexican Republic rendered in fine intaglio detail. The eagle's wings are spread wide with elaborately engraved feathers, and a wreath of laurel and oak flanks the base of the cactus. The circumferential legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA arcs along the upper border in raised Latin capitals, contained within a toothed milled rim.
