Obverse description Mexican national arms at center, depicting an eagle displayed facing, perched atop a cactus growing from a rocky outcrop, with a serpent in its beak, all within a wreath of oak and laurel branches tied at the base. The circular legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA arcs along the upper periphery in Latin script. The design follows the traditional republican arms style prevalent on Mexican coinage of the period.

Reverse description A Phrygian liberty cap at center, surrounded by radiating sunrays filling the field, symbolizing liberty and enlightenment. The surrounding legend, partially legible due to the crude striking typical of this Revolutionary-era emergency issue, references the Ejercito del Norte (Army of the North) and denomination. The date 1915 and mint mark CHE (Chihuahua) appear in the lower portion of the field, along with the assayer initials FM and fineness designation .902.
