Rafael Trujillo seized power in 1930 and almost immediately began rewriting Dominican history to center himself within it. The 25th anniversary of his regime in 1955 — branded the "Era of Trujillo" — was marked by an international fair held in Ciudad Trujillo, the capital he had renamed after himself in 1936, and this coin was part of the broader propaganda apparatus surrounding that event. Mintage was low; the pieces were distributed as commemoratives rather than circulated as currency.
Trujillo was assassinated by a CIA-linked conspiracy in 1961. The capital reverted to Santo Domingo shortly after.
