This issue marks the Philippines' first domestic silver peso struck after independence, produced at the Philadelphia Mint under contract. Andrés Bonifacio, the Tondo-born founder of the Katipunan revolutionary society, had been deliberately sidelined in official Philippine commemorative coinage for decades — a reflection of longstanding political tension between his working-class revolutionary image and the ilustrado elite that dominated postcolonial government. His elevation to the peso in 1963 coincided with growing nationalist sentiment under the Macapagal administration.
Mintage was limited, and few entered everyday commerce.
