The FAO commemorative series issued by Cuba in the 1990s was part of a broader push by the Food and Agriculture Organization to encourage member states to mint coins promoting food security themes — a program that produced hundreds of issues across dozens of countries, making most of them of limited numismatic distinction. Cuba's participation was largely diplomatic; the island was simultaneously navigating the "Período Especial," the severe economic contraction following the Soviet collapse, during which domestic food production fell catastrophically and rationing intensified.
KM#607 circulated alongside Cuba's dual-currency system, in which peso coins held little practical purchasing power.
