The Banco Central de la República Dominicana was established only in 1947, replacing a monetary system long dominated by U.S. dollar circulation — a hangover from the American occupation that lasted until 1924. This copper-nickel peso was struck across the Trujillo era's long shadow, during a period when the country was navigating its first sustained experiment with democratic governance following the dictator's 1961 assassination. At 26.7 grams, it is a heavy coin for its denomination, a deliberate policy choice aimed at projecting monetary credibility to a public that had lived through repeated currency instability.
