The Zamboanga Currency Committee was one of several emergency civilian bodies that scrambled to produce local scrip after Japanese forces severed the Philippine islands from one another in early 1942. Zamboanga, on the western tip of Mindanao, remained under Commonwealth control long enough for provisional notes to be authorized, printed locally with whatever materials were at hand, and pushed into circulation before the Japanese occupation of the peninsula closed that window.
The Philippine National Bank's name on these notes is essentially borrowed authority — the actual issuing mechanism was the committee, not the bank's central operations.
