Additional information

The Dominican Republic's peso coinage of this period was issued under the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, who ruled the country from 1930 until his assassination in 1961. Trujillo used the national currency as a tool of personal glorification — his portrait appeared on Dominican coins from 1936 onward, a practice common among 20th-century strongmen but particularly brazen here given that the coins displaced imagery tied to the republic's founding heroes.

Production was handled by the Philadelphia Mint under contract, as the Dominican Republic lacked its own minting facility throughout this period.
