Argentine provincial currency of this period was legal only within the issuing province — a fact that created constant friction with traveling merchants and federal tax collectors alike. Salta, a large but economically peripheral northwestern province, issued its own paper in 1922 during a period of chronic small-denomination coin shortages that plagued much of interior Argentina after World War I disrupted European metal supplies.
The printer credit "Hnos." — hermanos, brothers — almost certainly refers to a local or regional print house rather than one of the major Buenos Aires security printers, which matters for assessing paper and ink quality. Provincial emergency emissions printed outside the capital tend to show earlier deterioration along fold lines.
