The Banco Nacional de la República de Colombia had a turbulent institutional life — Congress abolished it in 1894, just a year after this note's issue date, following persistent accusations that the bank was being used to finance government deficits through unchecked emission. This note sits near the end of that run.
ABNC produced the series from New York, as they did for a significant portion of Latin American paper at the time. Colombian notes of this period are frequently encountered with punch cancellations or manuscript cancels, applied during demonetization — clean uncancelled survivors are the exception.
