Banco Nacional was Argentina's government-sponsored national bank, established in 1872 and restructured in 1876 — a perpetually undercapitalized institution that leaned heavily on note issuance to paper over its liquidity problems. By 1888 it was operating in the frenzied final years before Argentina's catastrophic 1890 financial collapse, the Baring Crisis, which would force the bank's liquidation and the eventual creation of Banco de la Nación Argentina in 1891.
Bradbury Wilkinson handled much of South America's prestige printing in this period. Notes from this issue that survived the bank's dissolution were rarely redeemed at face value.
