The Banco Provincial de Santa Fé was one of several Argentine provincial banks operating under the 1881 monetary unification framework, which established the peso moneda nacional but left provincial institutions considerable leeway to issue their own notes backed by gold deposits held with the national government. That arrangement collapsed in 1890 during the Baring Crisis, and most provincial bank notes — including this series — were withdrawn as the national government moved to centralize emission under the Caja de Conversión.
ABNC produced the plates in New York, as they did for a significant share of Argentine provincial paper during this decade. Notes of this type rarely survived the 1890–91 recall in quantity.
