正面描述 The Guatemalan national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quetzal bird perched atop a scroll inscribed with the independence declaration date LIBERTAD 15 DE SETIEMBRE DE 1821, flanked by crossed rifles and swords below and framed by two laurel branches. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA runs along the upper periphery. The date of issue appears in the exergue at the bottom of the coin. The overall design is executed in high relief with fine engraved detail, characteristic of the late nineteenth-century Central American coinage tradition.

附加信息

Guatemala's peso coinage of this period was struck under the liberal reform government of Justo Rufino Barrios, who had overhauled the nation's monetary system in the late 1870s to align it with the Latin American metric standard. The peso replaced the older real-based system, and these large silver coins were intended to project fiscal credibility for a government aggressively courting foreign investment in coffee infrastructure and railway concessions.

Production ran across the Guatemala City mint through a politically turbulent stretch that included Barrios's death at the Battle of Chalchuapa in 1885 — killed while attempting to forcibly reunify Central America.
