Banco Nacional was one of several private banks operating in Colombia under concession in the early 1880s, and this note predates the state monopoly on currency issue that would come with the later Banco Nacional de Colombia. The American Bank Note Company held an effective monopoly on high-quality intaglio printing for Latin American clients at this period, and Colombian banks returned to them repeatedly through the decade.
The PS# prefix places this in the Andean catalog of privately issued notes — a category that saw heavy attrition during Colombia's chronic civil instability of the 1880s and 1890s, with many issues redeemed, repudiated, or simply lost.
