| Descrizione del dritto | Printed in dark brown and black, the obverse bears the arched title BANCO NACIONAL DE CHILE across the top, with the word UNO repeated in a continuous border pattern on all four sides. The central field is dominated by an intaglio portrait vignette of a nobleman in period attire with a ruff collar, flanked to the left by a bull's head vignette and to the right by the Chilean coat of arms. The denomination UN PESO appears twice in the lower central field, accompanied by manuscript place and date of issue, and three signature lines below. |

The Banco Nacional de Chile was one of several private commercial banks authorized to issue currency under Chile's 1860 banking law, a decentralized arrangement that persisted until the state assumed sole issuing authority in 1925. The American Bank Note Company in New York handled the printing for this series — a common arrangement for Latin American issuers of the period who lacked domestic intaglio facilities capable of producing notes resistant to counterfeiting.
The date range spanning a decade reflects the bank's continued operation through the War of the Pacific, during which Chilean banking was under considerable strain and note convertibility was formally suspended in 1878 — the same year this series began circulating.
