Numeral 1 counters appear in each corner within ornate guilloche frames, and the serial number is printed in red. The lower portion bears the place and date inscription GUAYAQUIL, ENERO 2 DE 1874, with two manuscript signatures below. |

Banco del Ecuador was one of several private commercial banks granted note-issuing privileges in Ecuador during the 1870s, a period when the national government lacked the infrastructure to manage a central currency. The American Bank Note Company's involvement here is unsurprising — ABNC dominated Latin American contract printing throughout this period, and Ecuadorian institutions returned to them repeatedly across successive series.
The S142 series runs through multiple signature varieties, and distinguishing them requires close attention to the authorization panel. The "D" variety is among the scarcer signature combinations in the group.
