The Banco de la Província de Corrientes was one of several provincial quasi-banks that issued paper currency in mid-nineteenth-century Argentina before the national government consolidated monetary authority. Corrientes, a northeastern province with a long history of political autonomy — it was among the last to formally submit to Buenos Aires — issued its own notes well into the 1860s partly out of institutional inertia and partly because federal banking infrastructure simply hadn't reached the interior.
Provincial notes of this period were notoriously prone to counterfeiting and local discounting; a Corrientes peso often traded at a steep markdown outside the province's own commercial network.
