| Vorderseitenbeschreibung | The obverse is dominated by the heading VALE FLOTANTE DE 2a. CLASE in large letterpress type across the upper portion, with a small vignette of cattle at top centre. To the left, a standing allegorical female figure in classical robes holds a staff, rendered in intaglio engraving. The body of the note carries a manuscript text in Spanish obligating the Estado de Cundinamarca to pay the bearer one peso with ten percent annual interest, dated Bogotá, 31 de diciembre de 1857, with the serial number and denomination Rs. $1 handwritten in the upper corners. Two manuscript signatures appear at the foot, attributed to the Secretario de Hacienda and the Administrador General de Hacienda de Cundinamarca. |

Cundinamarca was one of several Colombian states that began issuing its own paper currency following the 1853 constitution, which effectively decentralized fiscal authority to the sovereign states of the Granadine Confederation. The Estado de Cundinamarca — the state surrounding and including Bogotá itself — was among the earliest to act on that authority. This 1857 peso predates the formal establishment of the Banco de Bogotá by fifteen years and circulated in an economy where metallic coin shortages made even low-denomination paper notes practically necessary.
Local Bogotá printing at this date means modest production values; the notes were not engraved by a European security printer.
