The Dominican Republic's early note-issuing history is tangled, and this 1849 peso sits in one of the messiest chapters. The republic had only declared independence from Haiti in 1844, and the financial infrastructure that followed was improvised at best. No established central bank existed; these notes emerged from a government desperate to fund both administration and ongoing military pressure from Haiti.
Pick 9 is among the earliest documented Dominican paper issues, and surviving examples are genuinely rare — not because they were carefully preserved, but because the young republic's monetary experiments were short-lived and the notes largely unredeemed.
