Villardompardo is a village in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, with a population that has never exceeded a few hundred. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican government's decree of June 1937 authorized municipal councils to issue small-denomination emergency paper money — moneda local — to address an acute shortage of coin in circulation. Thousands of Spanish municipalities did exactly this, producing notes of wildly varying quality and official rigor.
The Consejo Municipal de Villardompardo's 1 Peseta issue is among the more modest surviving examples of this phenomenon. The official stamp is the primary security feature — common practice for these local emissions, where printing resources were scarce and legitimacy rested on bureaucratic endorsement rather than engraving sophistication.
