Villajoyosa — a small coastal municipality in Alicante province — was among hundreds of Spanish towns that issued their own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republican government's coin shortage of 1936–37 stripped local commerce of usable small change. These municipal notes were authorized under a broader emergency decree but produced entirely at local initiative, meaning print quality, paper stock, and design ranged wildly from town to town.

The Garrido-Marin catalog reference places this among the rarer Levante emissions; many Villajoyosa issues survived only in tiny quantities, as the town's notes circulated hard through 1937 and few were preserved once the war moved through the region.
