| Opmerkingen |
Villafranca del Cid — now Vilafranca, in Castellón province — issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War when Republican-zone municipalities faced an acute shortage of small coinage. The central government's silver and copper had effectively vanished from circulation by mid-1936, hoarded or melted, forcing hundreds of towns to print their own vales and cartones. This note is among the smallest format issues in the entire Spanish municipal emergency series.
The Garrió Montagut catalog reference places this within a documented but genuinely scarce local emission. Most Villafranca del Cid pieces saw hard use in a small agricultural community and few survived intact.
