Opmerkingen

Vilajuïga is a small municipality in the Alt Empordà comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similarly tiny towns during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when Republican authorities began requisitioning coinage for the war effort in 1936–1937. The resulting coin shortage was acute enough that local councils — many with populations in the hundreds — were formally authorized under Generalitat decree to print their own substitute notes, often on whatever stock the nearest printer could supply.

Imprenta Trayter in Figueres served as the practical press for a number of these Alt Empordà municipal issues, which explains the family resemblance in paper weight and typography across several Turró-catalogued notes from the same region. Post-Franco collectors largely drove the cataloguing of these issues; documentation on actual print runs for Vilajuïga specifically is thin.
