Viladrau is a small municipality in the Montseny massif, Girona province, with a population that barely reached 1,000 in the 1930s. That an ajuntament this size issued its own emergency paper currency is not unusual for Catalonia — the Civil War monetary collapse of 1936–37 prompted hundreds of municipalities to print local vales and notes when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation.
Imprenta El Secretariat Català in Barcelona handled a significant share of these Catalan municipal issues, which accounts for a consistency of physical quality across otherwise unrelated issuing bodies. Turró catalogues over 3,000 such local issues; #2774 places this well into the documented but far from common tier.
