Vilada is a small municipality in the Berguedà comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of other Catalan and Spanish towns, it issued its own emergency paper currency during the Civil War after the Republic's coinage supply collapsed in 1936–37. These local notes — genericaly called "moneda de paper" — were authorized under a decree permitting municipal councils to fill the vacuum left by hoarded metal coin. The Consell Municipal issued under its own name rather than through a banking intermediary, which was typical of the smaller Berguedà towns.
Printed by Jaume Molins in nearby Berga, this 1 Peseta is catalogued under Turró 2765. Vilada's wartime issues are scarce survivors — the town's population was tiny, production runs were small, and redemption or destruction after the Nationalist takeover claimed most of what circulated.
