Viella — today spelled Vielha — is the capital of the Val d'Aran, a Pyrenean valley that remained Loyalist territory during the Spanish Civil War despite its geographic isolation. Like dozens of Catalan and Aragonese municipalities cut off from adequate coin supply after 1936, the Ajuntament de Viella resorted to locally issued emergency currency to keep small transactions functioning. These municipal pieces, collectively catalogued under the broader *moneda local* phenomenon, were produced in enormous variety across Republican-held Spain between 1936 and 1939.
The official stamp serves as the primary authentication device — hand-applied, which means impression quality and placement vary considerably between surviving examples.
