Verges is a small municipality in Girona province, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local government issued its own paper money when coinage disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply swallowed by wartime disruption. These municipal emissions were authorized under a Republican decree of late 1936 that permitted local councils to issue fractional currency to keep daily commerce moving.
Most Ajuntament issues from villages this size were printed in extremely limited runs, often on whatever paper stock was available locally. Survival rates are uneven — some issues vanished entirely, others turned up in quantity decades later in municipal archives.
