Comments

One of thousands of small-denomination emergency notes issued by Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, when the Republican zone suffered an acute shortage of fractional currency — coins had been hoarded, melted down, or simply stopped circulating. The Generalitat de Catalunya authorized local governments to fill the gap themselves, which is why notes from towns as small as Valls exist at all. Imprenta Castells was a local commercial printer, not a security press, and the production quality reflects that.

Survival rates for these municipal emissions vary enormously. Many were redeemed and destroyed; others simply disintegrated. The Turró catalog documents over 3,000 distinct Catalan local issues from this period.
