Vallada is a small municipality in Valencia, and this note is one of hundreds of hyper-local emergency issues produced by Popular Front committees across Republican Spain in the summer and autumn of 1936. The immediate trigger was the hoarding and disappearance of metallic coinage following the military uprising in July — small change effectively vanished from circulation within weeks, and local committees across the Republican zone stepped in to fill the gap with whatever printing resources they had at hand.
The thick card stock is characteristic of municipalities that lacked access to proper banknote paper and resorted to local printers, sometimes using commercial card. These issues were technically valid only within the issuing locality.
