Valderrobres is a small town in the Matarraña comarca of Aragon, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional paper money when the Republic's small change effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent. These local emergency notes, collectively termed "moneda de necesidad," were produced under wildly varying conditions, often by local printers with whatever stock was available, with no central oversight of design or security features.
The Gari Mon catalogue remains the primary reference for this material, though attribution and survival data for minor Aragonese issues like Valderrobres can be inconsistent. Genuinely circulated survivors tend to show wear consistent with heavy handling in a wartime rural economy.
