Urrea de Gaén is a small village in the Teruel province of Aragon, and like hundreds of similar municipalities it was forced to issue its own emergency paper fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War after metallic coins vanished from circulation almost immediately in 1936. The Consejo Municipal issues were purely local instruments — accepted within the village, worthless beyond it, and produced with whatever printing resources were available at the time.
The Gari Mon reference places this within the enormous documented universe of Republican-zone local issues, catalogued by Amado Gari Fernández. The handstamp is the sole security measure, and its clarity is the single most consequential factor in attribution for pieces from this municipality.
