Torroella de Montgrí is a small Catalan coastal town, and like hundreds of Catalan and Valencian municipalities, it issued its own emergency paper currency during the Spanish Civil War after the Republic's central coin supply collapsed in 1936–37. These municipal notes — collectively known as moneda local de necessitat — were produced by local printers with whatever materials were at hand, and their authority extended no further than the town's own commerce.
Turró's cataloguing of this series remains the primary reference, documenting over 2,500 distinct municipal emissions from that period. The sheer number of issuing bodies means individual print runs were tiny, and survival rates vary sharply by locality.
