Torreperogil is a small municipality in Jaén province, Andalusia. This note is one of thousands of emergency issues produced across Republican-held Spain during the Civil War (1936–39), when the removal of coin from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply lost to the chaos of war — left local economies without small-denomination exchange. Municipal councils, cooperatives, and even individual businesses filled the void with improvised paper, printing runs that were often tiny and entirely local in scope.
Card stock was a practical choice when proper banknote paper was unobtainable. Survival rates for these hyperlocal emissions are low; many were never redeemed after Nationalist forces consolidated control.
