Torrelles de Llobregat is a small municipality in the Baix Llobregat comarca, southwest of Barcelona, and this 1 Pesseta note is one of hundreds of emergency local issues produced during the Civil War after the collapse of conventional coin circulation in Republican-held Catalonia. The Generalitat's inability to supply sufficient small change pushed municipalities — many with populations in the low hundreds — into printing their own fiduciary paper. Piulats, a Barcelona commercial printer, handled a significant number of these municipal commissions throughout 1937.
