Tírvia is a village in the Pallars Sobirà comarca of the Catalan Pyrenees with a population that has rarely exceeded a few hundred. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican government's inability to maintain adequate small-denomination coinage in circulation prompted hundreds of Catalan municipalities — including the most remote — to issue their own paper emergency currency under a framework loosely sanctioned by the Generalitat de Catalunya. Tírvia's issue is among the most obscure of these local emissions.
The official stamp serves as the primary authentication device, a common solution when proper security printing was neither accessible nor affordable for a village of this scale. Turró catalogs these Catalan municipals exhaustively; #2471 places Tírvia at the extreme thin end of documented issuers by population.
