During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican government's inability to maintain adequate supplies of small-denomination coinage forced hundreds of Catalan municipalities to issue their own emergency paper money — these are collectively known as "paper moneda local." Tiana, a small coastal municipality in the Maresme comarca north of Barcelona, was one of scores of towns that printed fractional notes in 1937 simply to keep daily commerce moving. The issues were strictly local, accepted only within the issuing municipality's jurisdiction, and redeemable — in theory — once the crisis passed.
Turró catalogues over 2,700 distinct municipal issues from this period; Tiana's output is modest by volume and unremarkable in printing quality, typical of hastily produced local wartime scrip.
