Opmerkingen

Sort is a small town in the Pallars Sobirà comarca of Lleida, in the Pyrenean interior of Catalonia. Like hundreds of Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency after the Republican government's decree of September 1936 authorized local authorities to print low-denomination notes to address the near-total disappearance of metallic coin from circulation. The printer, Josep Güell, operated out of the neighboring town of La Pobla de Segur — a hyperlocal production arrangement common across rural Catalonia, where municipal issues rarely traveled more than a few kilometers before being redeemed or lost.

Turró's catalog documents the extraordinary granularity of this emergency coinage phenomenon, and Sort's entry is one of dozens from the Pallars region alone.
